Sixth Grade Contract
Welcome Back!
We are excited for the new school year and anxious to build relationships with our new sixth graders. In order for things to run smoothly in the sixth grade wing, it’s important that students fully understand what is expected of them in terms of behavior. Below you will find a contract that spells out the guidelines and consequences for the sixth graders of MAMS.
The Sixth Grade Teachers
The following is a list of guidelines, expectations, and consequences for the sixth graders at MAMS.
BEHAVIOR CITATIONS
Behavior citations are issued when students are not doing what they are expected to do. When a student receives their fifth citation in a quarter, an email notification will be sent home to inform. A detention will be assigned after 10 citations. Detentions may be given prior to 10 citations for severe isolated incidents in contrast to the schoolwide discipline plan. If a detention is issued prior to 10 citations, their citation number resets to zero.
SCHOOLWORK
Sixth grade students are expected to complete their work and hand it in on time. Students will be issued a citation for late assignments. Students who miss school due to vacation or illness, please refer to the student handbook.
RECESS NORMS
Students are required to go to recess unless they have permission from a teacher to stay in. Students “hanging out” anywhere other than the designated recess location will be given a detention. The library, bathrooms, art room, band room, and learning commons are examples of places students may not go during recess unless permission is granted from a teacher. Students lollygagging or stalling to go out to recess will be issued a behavior citation.
USE OF CHROMEBOOKS
The chromebooks are delicate tools used to augment students’ learning. Students are required to handle and use the chromebooks with due respect. Physical mishandling of chromebooks will result in a behavior citation. Playing games, changing the background of the chromebook, or visiting inappropriate websites will also result in a citation.
LEARNING COMMONS BEHAVIOR
The learning commons is a work area set aside in the library for students to maximize their learning experience. It is not a social area. Students misbehaving in the learning commons will be issued a behavior citation and may be restricted from using the area.
BEFORE SCHOOL
Prior to 7:45 students may go to their classrooms to see their teachers for help with schoolwork. Students, however, may not loiter in the classroom or hallways in the sixth grade wing. Students not in need of help who get to school before 7:45 must report to the gym or cafeteria. Students hanging out where they shouldn’t before school will be issued a behavior citation.
PHYSICALITY
Chasing other students around the classroom and hallways is prohibited. Touching other students is prohibited. Students chasing each other around the classroom or touching each other will be issued behavior citations.
CHANNEL ONE/ANNOUNCEMENTS
When channel one and/or announcements are playing on TV, students are expected to watch and listen. Students who are talking or messing around during this time will be issued a behavior citation.
CLASSROOM JOBS/RESPONSIBILITIES
At the conclusion of the day, you will have a small classroom cleaning job. These are 1-4 minute jobs that are simple in nature, but make our custodian’s work much easier at night. Students are expected to do their job well. Students neglecting to do their job will receive a behavior citation.
“ABOVE AND BEYOND” IN SCIENCE
Above and Beyond refers to short activities, labs or assignments to be done outside of normal classroom time. These are optional. HOWEVER, students wishing to earn an A for the quarter in science must complete one of these activities per unit block (four per quarter, unless an exception is made). Students who do not complete the Above and Beyond activities can only achieve up to a B+ for the quarter.
